Michelle Phillips (Australia)

Mish Phillips started playing Ultimate in late 2006, playing with Melbourne University at the Australian University Games despite having first touched a disc one week earlier. She soon got given the nickname 'Snail' by her teammates, in the classic Aussie tradition of 'opposite' naming conventions. She has played with Bauhaus Ultimate for the entire ten years of both her playing career and the club's existence, and captained or coached the team for the last six.

She first represented her country as a rookie on the Australian team at WUGC 2008 in Vancouver, and helped lead the U23s team to Australia's first gold medal on grass in 2010. Since then she has played WUGC 2012 in Japan, World Clubs in 2010 and 2014, World Games 2013 in Colombia, and captained the Australian Firetails Womens national team at WUGC 2016 in London 2016. She was named as clear MVP in the final of Dream Cup in Japan 2016 when the Australian team won the competition there. She is the Head Coach of the Australian U24s Women's team that will compete in Perth 2018.

3 things you enjoy about Ultimate
- The Adrenaline the sport provides me with. You never know what's gonna happen!
- I really do love making long beautiful throws. It captivates my mind.
- How ultimate makes the world a smaller place! You can have friends around the world if you play ultimate, it's like a universal language!

3 things that motivates me:
- There is no 'perfect' athlete, there's only hard work and perseverance. No matter how good I get, I know there is always room for improvement. You just gotta find it yourself.
- The Europeans are also human beings and so are we. So I'll always compare myself to them to get better, there's nothing they can do that I can't.
- To represent Singapore in a recognized World event. For starters, Sea games at least.

People tell me that I make it look so easy, But what they don't usually see is what I have to go through everyday to make it 'look easy'

What I enjoy about Ultimate:
- The community and all the people you meet around the world
- The competitiveness and athleticism on the field, yet the spirit of each player off the field
- Always learning from each game I play, wanting to compete more

3 things that motivate me:
- Wanting to improve more and never settling, the moment I settle that's the moment I lose motivation to play
- Competing against the best, 1 on 1 against my defender
- My teammates/fans is my biggest motivation, without them I wouldn't be where I am today.
